Cinnabar Island is a large island located off the southern coast of the Kanto region, south of Pallet Town. It is home to a large volcano. Blaine is the resident Gym Leader specializing in Fire-type Pokemon. Cinnabar is a kind of red mineral, associated with hot springs and volcanoes. The island is connected to the mainland by two water routes: Route 20 in the east and Route 21 in the north, leading to Fuchsia City and Pallet Town, respectively.


Route 20 is an east-west water route located in southern Kanto. Of the three water routes in Kanto, Route 20 is the longest in length. The eastern terminus is at Route 19 east of the Seafoam Islands, while the western end is at Cinnabar Island. The Seafoam Islands lie in the center of the route.

From Pallet, the route begins as a small channel of water. Its northern terminus is at Pallet Town. The southern terminus is at the north shore of Cinnabar Island. The route can be crossed either by boat or on a larger water pokemon. Pokemon such as Tentacool, Magikarp, Poliwag, Goldeen, Shellder, Horsea, Staryu, and Tentacruel are often spotted in the waters. It is also home for several other water-type, and flying-type pokemon. On the shore other pokemon such as Pidgey, Rattata, Raticate, and Tangela can be caught.
